Twenty years ago my husband and I were married at a courthouse in Maryland. We crossed the line from D.C. to do this but I can't remember the original reason. I think it had to do with the fact that Maryland did not require a blood test. My husband hates needles.

A small sour woman read the words we were to repeat without emotion and without a smile. It was clear she didn't like having to marry an interracial couple. She smiled at other couples. I saw her. She walked away without looking at us as she pronounced us husband and wife.

My wife is black and I am from a white Jewish family. When we announced our marriage, the family was very happy as far as I could tell.

However, my slightly senile Jewish grandmother had one issue. She grew up with white Jews marrying white Jews and having white Jewish children.

One day she confided to my cousin that she was upset. My cousin asked why and she said that, if we had children, she wasn't sure if she would be able to love them.

My cousin immediately said "Don't be silly Nana, of course you will." She may have used even harsher words, knowing my cousin.

Rob and Brenda

Rob, a white guy fell in love with Brenda, a black woman. This was in the New Orleans area in 1980 so we were free to associate without the overt hatred we may have endured just across the lake in rural Louisiana. In fact, New Orleans had an established history of mixed races with its obvious Cafe Aux Lait colored Creole population.

I met my boyfriend online when I was going to a different college. I wasn't on the dating site looking for a boyfriend. I was only on there to take the quizzes they had because I was bored in my dorm room. He messaged me first and we started talking for a couple of months and then we met in person on at the beginning of Dec. 2007. On our second date he gave me a ring for a Christmas/ b-day present for me and I asked him if he would be my boyfriend. We have been together ever since Dec. 4th of 2007. I love him so much! If I am sad he makes me happy again. He is my best friend.

I met my wife while away on business. The funny thing was she was on her way to audit my project! I will always remember the day she walked into the office. As far as I was concerned time really did stop. I could not believe how beautiful she was and from that moment on I was hooked. Love at first sight does exist.

The last two years of my life had been full of ups and downs and surprises. Little did I know one of the many surprises that would happen would be meeting my soul mate.
It was the summer of 2010 and after losing my fiance just the year before, I had almost given up on dating...and focused my energy solely into school and work ( at the time I was working for the Department of Homeland Security).

Last year was such an amazing time! Obama had just won the election, I turned 40yrs old (fabulous!) and was feeling sort of complete with my new decision to move to NYC the following year...and then I met HER. My soulmate walked into the doors of my office and we instantly knew it was kismet...she was a teacher as well and we taught together at my Summer Media Camp that year.

I met my husband 26 years ago when he and I were just 15 and 16 years old. He kissed me for the first time at the Spring, my freshmen year of high school. We broke up after a few months, but remained very good friends.

Tara and Teddy

Teddy and I met in college, in creative writing class. We became best friends over the next few semesters, and were virtually inseparable. One of our English professors referred to us as Beatrice and Benedict (nerdy, I know!). We couldn't understand why everyone assumed we were dating. Let's just say we were deluding ourselves. One minute we were dancing, the next we were kissing, and here we are five years later!
